How Much Does Sump Pump Installation Cost in Toronto?
The cost depends on whether a sump pit already exists and how the discharge line is routed:
- Existing pit, pump replacement only: $600–$1,200 for a standard submersible pump swap
- New pit + basin + pump + discharge line: $1,200–$3,500 for a full installation with concrete cutting
- Battery backup system (add-on): $400–$800 for a battery backup unit installed alongside the primary pump
These are the installed costs before the City of Toronto subsidy. After the rebate, most homeowners pay significantly less — in some cases the rebate covers the majority of the project cost.
City of Toronto Sump Pump Rebate: Up to $2,250
Under the City of Toronto Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program, eligible homeowners can receive up to 80% of invoiced costs, capped at:
- $2,250 for sump pump installation (with weeping tile connection)
- $300 for battery backup power
- Additional rebates available for backwater valve installation and downspout disconnection
The program was expanded in November 2025. For work completed on or after November 12, 2025, the rebate amounts above apply.
How to Apply for the Toronto Sump Pump Rebate
The application process requires a licensed plumber to complete a Home Plumbing Assessment Form as Step 1. This form is completed during or after the installation — your plumber assesses the sump pit, pump type, and discharge routing, and certifies the work meets the City’s requirements.
Once the assessment form is completed by your plumber, you submit it to the City along with your itemized invoice. The City reimburses up to 80% of eligible costs directly to you.

- Work must be completed by a licensed plumber (TSSA-licensed in Ontario)
- An itemized invoice showing labour and materials separately
- A building permit may be required — confirm with your plumber before work begins

Types of Sump Pumps
Submersible Sump Pump
The most common choice for Toronto homes. The pump motor sits submerged in the pit, which reduces noise and keeps the motor cool. Reliable for most residential applications and qualifies for the City rebate.
Pedestal Sump Pump
The motor sits above the pit on a column. Easier to access for maintenance but noisier. Less common in new installations.
Battery Backup Pump
Activates automatically when the primary pump fails or during a power outage — exactly when you need it most. Toronto’s worst flooding events are during storms that also knock out power. A backup pump is strongly recommended and qualifies for an additional $300 rebate.
Water-Powered Backup Pump
