ED Plumbing — Toronto & GTA plumbers

Calling a plumber without knowing the cost is one of the most stressful parts of a home emergency. This guide gives you honest, current numbers so you know what a fair quote looks like before you pick up the phone — whether it’s a burst pipe at 2 a.m. or a water heater that finally gave out.

All figures below are for licensed, insured plumbers in the Toronto and GTA market. They reflect 2026 rates.

The Short Version: What You’ll Actually Pay

How Toronto Plumbers Charge

There are two pricing models you will encounter: hourly rate and flat rate.

Hourly rate plumbers typically charge $100–$150 per hour plus parts, with a one- or two-hour minimum. The problem with hourly pricing for homeowners is that the final cost is impossible to verify. A job described as “about two hours” can become four hours if problems compound — and you have limited recourse.

Flat rate pricing means you receive a quoted price for the complete repair before any work begins. The plumber absorbs the time risk; you know what you are paying. This is the pricing model we use at ED Plumbing and the one we recommend you ask about before booking any job.

Emergency Calls vs. Scheduled Service

Many plumbing companies add a surcharge for after-hours, weekend, or holiday service — sometimes $75–$150 on top of the base rate, sometimes baked into a higher flat-rate quote. Ask specifically before booking whether the quote you receive covers the full cost at your time of call, or whether there are additional fees.

At ED Plumbing, we charge a flat diagnostic fee for the visit. The quote we give you after assessment is the price you pay — no after-hours surcharge layered on top. Our 24/7 service is the same rate regardless of when you call.

Why Prices Vary So Much

A $200 difference between two quotes for the same job is not unusual. The main drivers are:

Common Repairs and What They Cost in Toronto

Toilet Repair or Replacement

A running toilet or a flapper replacement is one of the lower-cost plumbing calls — typically $150–$250 for parts and labour. A full toilet replacement (removing the old toilet, supply line, wax ring, and installing a new unit) runs $350–$600 depending on the fixture you choose. Customer-supplied fixtures are generally fine; we advise keeping the purchase receipt in case the unit arrives with a defect.

Faucet or Fixture Replacement

Replacing a kitchen or bathroom faucet runs $150–$350 installed, depending on whether the shutoffs are accessible and functional. Old, corroded shutoff valves sometimes need to be replaced at the same time — add $100–$200 for that if needed.

Drain Cleaning

Professional drain cleaning in Toronto costs $250–$500 for a main line hydro-jet with camera confirmation. Avoid drain cleaning services quoted at $99 or less — at that price point, a cable snake is used to punch a temporary hole through a blockage rather than fully clearing the line. The blockage comes back within weeks. We camera the drain before and after every cleaning so you can see the actual result.

Water Heater Replacement

A standard 40–50 gallon tank water heater fully installed (including removal and disposal of the old unit) runs $1,200–$2,200 in Toronto. Tankless water heater installation is $2,500–$4,500 installed, depending on the unit specification and whether the gas line and venting need to be modified. Tankless units cost more upfront but last 20+ years and significantly reduce hot water energy costs.

Emergency Burst Pipe

Burst pipe cost varies enormously based on where the pipe is, what material it is, and how much water has escaped before the shutoff. A straightforward copper supply line repair in an open area: $350–$600. A burst pipe inside a finished wall that requires drywall access: $600–$1,500 for the plumbing work alone, plus separate drywall repair costs. The single most important thing to know is where your main water shutoff valve is — turning it off immediately limits damage and limits cost.

How to Avoid Overcharges

  1. Get the full quote in writing before approving any work. A verbal quote is better than nothing, but a written quote is enforceable. Ask for it explicitly.
  2. Ask if there are any conditions under which the price would increase. A reputable plumber will tell you honestly (e.g., “if the shutoff valve is corroded and needs replacement too, that adds X”). Surprises on the invoice that were not disclosed upfront are a red flag.
  3. Verify the licence. Ontario plumbers are licensed through the Ontario College of Trades. You can verify a plumber’s certification through their website. TSSA certification is additionally required for gas appliance work.
  4. Check insurance. Ask for a certificate of insurance. The plumber should carry minimum $2 million commercial general liability coverage. Without it, you are personally liable for any damage that occurs during the work.
  5. Understand what is included. Ask specifically: does the quote include parts, permit (if required), and clean-up? Or just labour?

When to Call vs. When to Wait

Some plumbing issues are genuinely urgent; others can safely wait for business hours and a scheduled appointment. Know the difference before you pay an emergency rate for something that was not an emergency.

Call immediately (cannot wait): active water leak you cannot stop, sewer backup with sewage on the floor, no hot water in winter with vulnerable household members, burst pipe with active flooding, gas smell near appliances.

Can be scheduled during business hours: slow drains, running toilet, low pressure, one dripping faucet, water heater that is aging but still functioning.
